Free EPA 608 Practice Test: 14 Questions With Instant Scoring

Fourteen questions in the style of the real exam, scored instantly, no signup and nothing recorded. Below the quiz: exactly how the real test is scored, what it costs, and the 2026 changes that dated most prep materials.

Each question locks when you answer. Green is right, red is wrong with the correct answer shown, and your score appears at the end with the honest read on whether you are ready.

How the real exam is scored

Every section of the EPA 608 exam is 25 multiple-choice questions, scored independently. The regulatory pass mark is 70 percent, which on a 25-question section works out to 18 correct answers. Sections you pass are retained even if another fails, so a failed section is retaken alone, usually for a small per-section fee, and your credential upgrades as sections accumulate.

The proctored exam is closed book, in person or online with a webcam proctor, with immediate results. Type I has a mail-in open-book variant with a higher bar of 21 out of 25, sensible only if small appliances are all you will ever service. Anyone aiming at Universal, which is Core plus all three types and the standard ask on job postings, should sit everything proctored in one session.

What changed for 2026

The A2L refrigerants now shipping in new residential equipment, R-454B and R-32, have reached the exams following the AIM Act phasedown of R-410A in new systems. Prep materials that stop at R-22 and R-410A are out of date, and the questions above reflect the current structure. Ask any paid prep provider directly whether their bank covers A2Ls before spending money.

How to study, in one paragraph

Core is where people fail, because it tests law and numbers rather than anything learned on a truck: recovery requirements, sale restrictions, disposal rules, cylinder handling. Active recall against practice questions beats rereading a manual, the free study materials from the EPA-approved certifying organizations cover everything tested, and a focused weekend on Core plus a review pass on the type sections is genuinely enough preparation for most people entering the trade.

What it costs and where to take it

Most technicians pay roughly $25 to $85 for the exam depending on provider and format, with in-person proctored Universal packages higher at some centers. There is no state or federal fee. Many of the school programs in our state rankings fold the exam into tuition, and union apprenticeships typically cover it outright, so check before paying out of pocket. The full breakdown of types, costs, and how 608 fits your state license is in our EPA 608 certification guide.
